Frequently Asked Questions

We are so excited you are interested in joining Betsy Beier along with Travellur in Marrakech for their Wanderlust Creative Retreat. Below are answers to many common questions, but if you have more, feel free to send an email anytime!

WHERE IS THE VILLA?

Domain Akhdar is located about eight miles outside of Marrakech, Morocco.

HOW DO I GET THERE?

Fly to Marrakech Airport (RAK) in Morocco. We will organize a private transfer for you to whisk you away to the villa. Flights from the United States and Mexico usually have a stopover in Casablanca, London or Paris. Most European countries have direct flights to Marrakech.

WHAT TIME SHOULD I GET THERE?

Most flights from the United States and Mexico will arrive in the morning. If you are coming from Europe, book a flight that arrives before noon. Two airport pick-ups will be scheduled at 11am and 1pm. If your flight arrives later than 12.30pm, we can arrange transport for you at an additional charge, around 30 euros.

(Note: To calculate the timezone differences between US and Morocco see: world clock.)

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER I PAY DEPOSIT AND RESERVATION IS CONFIRMED??

A welcome packet with detailed information will be sent to you; from what to pack to an art supply list.

Betsy is also eager to create a warm and welcoming community. After your booking is confirmed, Betsy will send a personal message to arrange a time to meet online individually to be able to get to know one another.

WHAT SHOULD I BRING?

Once your reservation is confirmed you will receive a welcome packet containing a recommended packing list from Travellur as well as Betsy will send you an art supply list.

WHO IS GOING TO BE THERE?

We all need a refresh from our everyday, a chance to break away from routine and get creatively inspired.  Maybe you’ve always wanted to visit Morocco but not sure about traveling there alone, or haven’t found the perfect travel partner or group. Perhaps you'd like to add more artistic endeavors in your life, but don't know where to start.

This retreat offers a chance to not only experience this legendary destination in the protective hands of reliable guides but also provides plenty of creative inspiration as well as relaxation time for yourself.

The hidden gem to this retreat is the supportive community of women that will come together - making connections and treasured memories to last a lifetime.

I AM NOT AN ARTIST, IS THIS RETREAT FOR ME?

YES!  With years of teaching groups from young to old, non-artists to professionals, Betsy is passionate about sharing art activities and committed to helping even those who claim NOT to be artsy that they too are creative!

Betsy's approachable teaching style purposefully incorporates many different art mediums and techniques - journaling, collaging, sketching, watercolor, photography, etc. - to encourage all types of participation.

AM I REQUIRED TO PARTICIPATE IN ALL THE ACTIVITIES IN THE PROGRAM?

This retreat is for YOU. We have intentionally planned the program/itinerary to offer a mix of travel excursions/adventures; creative activities and free time; yet if you feel like taking a nap, a swim, forgo a planned activity, head to bed early, or an other idea - that is absolutely OK.

For those who may want to venture out and explore other areas or tourist options not on our itinerary on their own, we will not be able to help with arranging those alternative details as we will be otherwise engaged, but you are welcome to pursue this on your own.

WHAT KIND OF FOOD?

Our private chef will prepare delicious Moroccan food, including gluten-free options. You will have a choice of meat, fish or vegetarian at each meal. Beer, wine, and soft drinks are included. Snacks, fruit and beverages will be available at all times. We will also be eating at two restaurants known for good food, friendly atmosphere and excellent views or people watching. All meals are included except for one dinner and one lunch on excursion days where optional activities means not everyone will be eating together. You are always free to go into town for dinner if you want to explore, but we ask that you let us know at least 24 hours before so we can arrange with the chef.

WHAT LANGUAGE ARE WE TALKING?

All instruction will be in English, but of course, Betsy will always want to teach a new word or two in the local language when given the opportunity!

DO YOU RECOMMEND TRAVEL INSURANCE?

Unexpected things can happen and travel insurance can help provide peace of mind. Travellur has partnered with World Nomads to bring you flexible, reliable and straight forward travel insurance. See booking page for details.

WHAT ABOUT HEALTH/COVID SAFETY?

You can read more about our covid safety practices on the booking page. Be assured that every precaution will be respected and updated recommendations will be implemented. All attendees must be vaccinated.

As is with any type of travel, it is important you are responsible to have any medication you need with you and/or other health/vaccination updates as per the recommendations of your own health care provider.

WHEN IS CHECK OUT TIME?

Check out time will be at 10am on Saturday, November 11.

WHAT KIND OF MONEY?

Local currency is the Moroccan Dirham. Dirhams are not available outside of Morocco. If you have left over Dirhams on departure, you are only permitted to change back half of what you changed to Dirhams, so keep your exchange receipts. Therefore, it’s best to bring cash to change as needed. Euros are the best bet, so if you have some, bring them, but no need to change dollars to euros to change to Dirhams. You will not need much cash since all but two meals are included and we will mostly be at the villa. I suggest changing 50-100 US$ at the airport on arrival. You will need cash for the optional activities at the Kasbah Bar Ourika. Hammam is about 50$, guided hike is about 30$, camel ride is about 40$. If you intend on doing some serious shopping in town, you will get a better exchange rate at the ATM in the market.  There are no ATMs at or near the villa.

Still Have Questions?

Please email me, Betsy, if you have any other questions! I'd love to hear from you.
