Our Morning Begins...

Our experience begins with a few engaging wanderlust warm-up exercises outside the garden gates touching on some principles of Japanese garden design and transporting us to Japan without getting on a plane! 

Energized with excitement, we will head into the garden and take a moment at the tea house for some story telling fun preparing us for our hands-on activity and walk through the garden.

Exploring the Garden...

Following our storytelling at the tea house, we will slowly walk through the garden, and dive into our main activity of creating a one-of-a-kind concertina-style journal (accordion folded watercolor pages) of our adventures. We will use all our senses and immerse ourselves in the landscape, doodling, sketching and writing details that spark our interest.

Helpful handouts and personalized instructions will be offered throughout our wandering to teach us how to simply capture the serene environment in a story telling format.

Participants will leave inspired by the beauty of the location and with a colorful hand crafted memory of their morning wandering a Japanese Garden.

Event Details

Skill Level

This experience is open to all skill levels. As we explore this location, I will provide simple instructions and exercises to help everyone follow along and craft an imaginative story. I will also provide step by step handouts and be available for individual help throughout the event as we doodle, sketch and write. 

For more advanced artists, I welcome you adding your own personal flair to our activity.

Art Supply List

All art supplies will be provided for use while on location.

We will be using:
  • black pen
  • watercolor pencils
  • water brushes
You are welcome to bring your own if you prefer.

Health, Safety & Other Details

This event will be held outdoors and requires some standing and a small amount of walking along paved garden paths. There are benches in the garden for participants to sit down as needed. Weather at this time of year is typically very pleasant, but there could be lingering fog or bright sun, so please bring a light sweater/jacket and/or sunscreen and a hat depending on the conditions.

Being mindful of COVID, I will defer to all county (San Mateo County) and state (California) pandemic rules regarding mask usage on the day of the class. Personally, I request that non-vaccinated participants (and vaccinated participants if desired) have a mask on hand as needed.

Parking
San Mateo has loads of on street parking and as well as garages and parking lots close to the park. Everything directly around the park is metered (credit/debit card and coins/cash activated). If you park farther away from the park, you may find unmetered spots.
