A Life Between Two Worlds
There’s a certain kind of shared experience that despite possible being miles apart, can make you feel much closer - it's those everyday moments that we all do: the morning coffee, a walk down the street, a favorite food or a quick run to the store.
Right now, my husband and I are living between two continents. I’m here in Paris, while he’s in San Francisco. It’s only temporary, but for now, our daily lives unfold in two different places. It’s requiring a little bit of adjustment and of course a bunch of creativity too to not get trapped in the repetitive “how was your day” or "how did you sleep" text!
Knowing this year would be a little different, we brainstormed some simple ways to stay connected and engaged in each other’s day to day. Starting simple, we chose to do something we’ve done on many of our trips throughout the decades -a small daily “I Spy” type of game.
A Simple Daily Ritual
We call it our Color Hunt, and the idea couldn’t be more straightforward: each day, we choose one color, and throughout the day, we look for it wherever we are.
It might appear in the street, in a shop window, inside a book, clothing on a passing stranger, or in the smallest detail we would normally overlook. There are no rules, no expectations, no pressure to find something extraordinary, in fact, sometimes the most mundane is the best!
Some days, we don’t have much time, and just find a small items from around the house, and that’s enough. Other days, it appears everywhere, almost as if the world is playing along with us! Most of the time, we take a photo, but I’m not ruling out adding some sketches into the mix. The medium doesn’t matter.
What matters is that we saw it and we are sharing moments. And somehow, in that simple act of looking for the same color, our days feel connected even when they are an ocean apart.
Want to Play Along?
Want to join in and search for a color today wherever you may be? I’d love to turn this into something we do together.
Just reply to this email, and I can send the colors we are hunting for that week. Then all you have to do is notice them in your day — wherever you are in the world. Take a quick photo or 2 or 3, or even make a quick drawing if you want. There’s no right way to do it.
I would love to share the experience and see what you find in your corner of the world!
Le Fil Rouge
What started as a simple game has become something more than we expected. It’s a way of sharing our days, of staying present, and creating a thread between two places that matter deeply to us (our fil rouge). It’s a shared way of seeing and a reminder that even when we are far apart, we can still experience the world together — noticing the same colors, holding the same intention, and finding connection in the smallest details.
